"A New Way of Seeing"

Design Standpoint

My goal is to pursue Media Design as a major, therefore i chose to do my stop motion on what I think is the best explanation on what Media Design actually is, and how it is "A New Way of Seeing". After researching Media Design, I then decided on my quote for my standpoint -

"Thinking outside the box and expanding the world with Media Design".

This simply means that Media Design expands the way the world sees and looks at this type of design, by using different types of medium. If we look at what types of art forms and medium is involved in Media Design, we find that there is a lot that goes into it. For my stop motion I decided to use drawings, photography, and my laptop to show the process that basic animation goes through. I started off by first drawing my object, which in this case a legoman. This drawing then faded out into a photograph which turned into a real life animation, involving the object moving around and discovering the laptop and how it was created. By showing this in my stop motion, I wanted to get the idea out that with Media Design, you can use almost any type of medium to create an animation.

This is my final storyboard for Project 3, it relates to my actual stop motion because I am going with a superhero/superman theme to it. This made me think of the most appropriate style to a storyboard I could do, and I found that a comic book style would work the best. So I drew it first, then put it through my computer and colored in the main parts leaving the background the same color, which looked cool in the end giving it that depth.

This is my stop motion so far for DSDN101. We had to have an interim presentation of what we've done so far with our project "The Clip" and so far I've come up with this. It's still a work in progress and I am considering starting again to change the lighting within it since it was uneven as you can see from the preview. That was one of the main feedbacks I got from the tutors Joneen, Ali and Vanessa, and also they asked me what else I was going to do. I am still planning to start off with my drawing which turns into a series of photos which then turns into a real life animation. This is my proposal for a "New Way of Seeing", with other phrases that relate to my subject matter put in there as well with as much relevance as possible.

Conflict Records clashes the formal elegance of classical music and the distorted chaos of dubstep to create a new genre of music aimed at 17 to 28 year olds. Through our advertisement we are showing a literal conflict of the ornament smashing against the graffitied wall to establish contrast between the two diverse music genres we combine. The music we have chosen is “River flows in you Dubstep Remix” by “Yiruma” because it best represents the essence of music Conflict Records would produce. Instead of representing our slogan “Hold onto your snapback”in a strict literal form, we have referenced it in a more abstract way, this allows our advertisement to subconsciously bridge the gap between our two advertising medias.

Research Inspirations

This one is my favorite drawing stop motion. I like it because it has a long time lapse and throughout each photo that's taken there's no sign of the artist at all. Which means they would have to draw then take a photo of their drawing and so on. This is a clever technique that I could incorporate into my stop motion if I choose to do a drawing animation.

This one sparked my interest as well, because unlike the first video I liked I don't actually have an iPad at the moment. This video is very clever as this person only uses A4 pieces of paper to create the functions of an iPad, without even needing one. I got the sense of the iPad throughout the whole animation so I thought it was very successful.

I like this stop motion because it incorporates modern technology and in this case they use an iPad and iPhones to create this animation. This would be a cool idea to use and just have several pictures/jpegs saved and then just flick through each image to create my own stop motion.

Dance

This is my final storyboard, I ended up going with the word "dance" because I thought it would be a really fun animation to create, and also it is something I relate to personally. It starts off with 2 legs moonwalking into the page whilst Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" is playing. I chose to only use legs because it portrays how the bottom half of the body can also be entertaining to watch just as much as the top half. The letter "D" made the perfect shape for the feet and the rest made the perfect amount of letters for the rest of the legs, which made me able to add joints. After the moon walking has finished, the dancing transitions to a dancing style of our generation which is called the "Shuffle". It is mostly leg movements, made famous by LMFAO, a good way to mix both dances together. After the few seconds of shuffling, the dancer will prepare for the finale - a backflip followed by the matrix style splits. I slowed both of these parts down a little bit to emphasize the power of these moves, a real crowd pleaser and a real head turner too. After the perfect backflip, it transitions to a jump into the splits which will stop the music, and a high pitched scream will happen. So technically it doesn't really end well for our dancer...

Project 2 Ideas

I brainstormed heaps of ideas on a sheet of paper of words that could be a possible final product of mine, and so far I have come up with 6 words that I have documented into a storyboard. I chose Pour, showing the fluidity of the word by pouring it down the box and slowly filling it up, giving it the hint of water. Fall starting from the top and each individual letter falling down one by one. Grow to show the growth of a tree/plant, starting with one word and slowly transforming to a bigger tree. Bass, starting off with block letters, then transforms to massive letters like you would hear from the bass of a subwoofer. Drink was a fun I thought, Placing the letters vertically, then slowly emptying like someones drinking it, might give it the hint of it being alcohol too. But my favorite one so far was dance. This could possibly be my final word. I had the idea of it using DANCE twice as legs/feet, as the letter D makes that perfect shape for feet. It was going to start off on the outside then "moonwalk" in to the center, hip hop spin 2/3 times then jump into the splits...Also I was interested in making it do the "shuffle" (LMFAO reference) which I think would be very entertaining to watch. 

This is the class exercise that we did for project 2, we had to cut out each letter then paste it back onto a new page. We had to explore different spacing between each letter but it has to be perfectly horizontal. "healthy" was a serif font so it was harder to use. I had trouble with the letter A the most because it was bottom heavy with the top of it being just a point. It was hard to judge it was aligned or not, also similar problems with the L, T and Y. 

Individual Work

I thought shadow photography would be really interesting to look into with my individual work, so I researched it and found a photographer, Antonio Grambone, who specializes in shadow/black and white photography. I tried to portray a style he did on one of his photos called "Shadow bike", by making my compass an optical illusion, giving it the sense that it's floating and also adding 2 shadows by using 2 light sources.
